Original article published in The Banner News

Magnolia, Arkansas -- Dec. 22, 2006 -- Susan Gill has been promoted to general manager of the Banner-News of Magnolia, effective Jan. 1.

Gill, a lifelong Magnolia resident, will retain her title as advertising manager in addition to her new responsibilities as general manager.

The announcement was made Thursday by Buddy King of Texarkana, president of the Palmer Newspapers group.

As general manager, Gill is responsible for the operation of all newspaper departments including advertising, circulation and editorial, and for the operation of its office supply company, Banner-News Office Outfitters. The newspaper has a daily circulation of about 4,100 and has 19 full-time and four part-time employees. Gill reports to King.

Gill succeeds Betty Chatham, who was recently named general manager of the El Dorado News-Times. The News-Times is another member of the Palmer Newspapers group.

"Susan has been with us 26 years. She's done a good job," King said. "She's certainly proved herself in this interim period while Betty's been (in El Dorado). I hope you will give her your support and work with her."

Chatham said Gill has been with the newspaper as its technology has progressed from the photo-typesetting era to the receipt and transmission of ads through the Internet.

"I have all the confidence that Susan can take care of the Banner-News. She knows all the advertisers and her integrity is truly an asset to the Banner-News," Chatham said.

"There is no way we could be doing this without all of you," Gill told the Banner-News staff.

Gill is a graduate of Magnolia High School. She received a bachelor of business administration degree in management from the University of Oklahoma. She started working for the Banner-News in 1980, becoming advertising manager in 1991. Among her recent accomplishments was the creation and organization of the newspaper's Ladies Night Out. The third Ladies Night Out will be Feb. 13.

Gill is married to Russ Gill. She is a member of St. James Episcopal Church of Magnolia and serves on the church vestry as secretary. She is an associate member of the Magnolia Junior Charity League and a member of P.E.O.
