The Texarkana Gazette Receives Honors from the Associated Press

TEXARKANA, Texas -- Mar 28, 2006 -- In March, the Texarkana Gazette was notified of an “Instant Citation” from the Associated Press for support in the coverage of the triple slaying in De Queen, Ark., on January 28 through the children’s funeral on February 2. The mother has  been arrested for the smothering of her three children.   “The Gazette called the Little Rock bureau with details even as it was preparing its own story for publication Sunday morning,” the recommendation stated. “The Gazette also moved first-day photos, following up with photos  on Sunday and with details and pictures of the boys’ funeral ...”

The photo of the father mourning at his oldest son’s casket was selected as February’s Arkansas AP Member Photo of the Month.

Jim Williamson was the lead reporter for the coverage and continues to follow the story. Gazette photographer Evan Lewis shot the image and received a $50 check for the winning entry.

In late 2005, two other Gazette photographers were honored with AP Member Photo of the Month Awards. Aaron Street won in October for a photo from the Union Pacific train derailment in Texarkana that killed one, destroyed a neighborhood and made national news. Robb Pittard took the same award a few months earlier for his coverage of a major bus wreck between Shreveport, La., and Texarkana.
