NW Arkansas Democrat/Gazette to begin publishing Spanish-language paper

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Mar 22, 2006 -- The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette began publication of a Spanish-language weekly newspaper on April 6, 2006. Noticias Libres (meaning “Free News”) is expected to comprise two sections of eight pages each, one focusing on news and the other on sports and entertainment. The content will include original stories by local news writers along with some translated stories from area newspapers and national and world interests from a Spanish-language subscription service. Local columnists will also be featured.

The initial plans include printing 10,000 copies of the paper to be distributed free from racks and countertops primarily in areas in and around Benton and Washington counties. The publication will compete directly with two weekly Spanish-language newspapers in the region that are owned by Stephens Media Group of Little Rock.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2003 American Community Survey for the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Bentonville, reported 34,046 residents of Hispanic origin.
